What Board(s) are you on?

Chair GIA Deed Governance Group.

Are they appointed Directorships or were you elected onto the Board?

Appointed by the membership – 22 primary industries.

Do you have a specific responsibility or portfolio on the Board?

The role of the Chair is to promote constructive discussion about the issues to hand, highlight conversations about the future, and recognise that collaborative thinking and action will deliver the best results.

Did you get on to the Board the first time you tried? If not, how long/how many attempts did it take? Do you think being a woman was a barrier to getting onto this Board?

Previous roles:

Board of Chamber of Commerce
Board of International School Hamburg
Board of Tauranga Hockey Association
Board of Kaimai School

I stood for the Kaimai School Board, knowing it was a rural school, with 70 kids, and a few challenges. One of my daughters was at the school and the second about to go. It was a country school and we were still considered ‘new’ although we’d lived very close to the school for four years. I didn’t get on to the Board because I didn’t do any of the jobs – the people appointed either cleaned the pool or mowed the school lawns or ran a local event. I was later co-opted on, when the Principal recognised he needed someone with some financial acumen.

Did you have any governance training?

I am a member of the Institute of Directors and have done the 5-day governance course with them, and a number of other governance courses.
